Sector Head Overview

In this role, you will be responsible for managing and overseeing a team of Business Development and Key Account Management staff within a specified Consumer & Retail vertical market. The role executes DGF’s global and regional sector strategy on a country level as aligned with the country, regional and global priorities. This position manages relationships with our largest accounts, focused on driving the acquisition and retention and customer experience of a strategic, multi-national portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire and provide coaching and development to account management staff. Assign work, set completion dates, review work, and manage performance in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and performance management processes.
  • Oversee sales revenue generation, profit and/or expense objectives for the account management function.
  • Develop sales plans and budgets for achieving sales goals within a defined set of key accounts.
  • Manage the key account planning process, develop and executes strategic plans (through subordinates) for all key accounts.
  • Assist account management representatives in maintaining and expanding critical accounts.
  • Identify and pursues growth opportunities for key accounts.
  • Periodically visits key markets to investigate operations and local conditions.
  • May maintain personal responsibility for one or more key accounts.
  • Partner with other internal management to communicate sales problems, business observations, customer feedback, etc.
  • Provide management with information used to evaluate strategic opportunities.


  • Establishes and implements business strategies that have the potential to significantly impact the business unit or functional results.
  • Regularly interacts with senior internal personnel on issues of major significance, often requiring coordination between organizational unit.
  • Consults with peers and top management in long-range company planning.
  • Understands and leverages informal networks to get things done.
  • Builds cross-team effectiveness; fosters empowerment and involvement.
  • Regularly interacts with contacts outside DHL on broader, more strategic issues.
  • Drives quality and customer service.
  • Prime spokesperson to external customers, industry groups, and/or professional associations.


  • Leads initiatives and processes for business/functional area within overall area of responsibility.
  • Proposes policies, methods, processes, techniques for business function based on change initiatives.
  • Guides the successful completion of major programs across job areas or functions.
  • Manages operational plans and activities that result in accomplishing business strategies.
  • Supervises, coordinates and provides leadership to and reviews the work of managerial and senior professional level subordinates.
  • Creates workforce and staffing plans and ensures availability of human capital necessary to accomplish planned business results.


  • Directly supervises a staff of professional individual contributors at the senior or technical advisor level.
  • Directs performance planning, coaching, and evaluation.
  • Manages and responsible for results delivered for a major portion of profit center, line of business, business process or department as part of the executive team of a department or area.

Sector Head Job Qualifications:

  • Excellent systems knowledge to include Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Ability to travel to assigned territories as needed 
  • Creativity in developing innovative solutions and ability to present solutions to clients & internal sales staff 
  • Self-disciplined with strong leadership abilities 
  • Broad understanding of the forwarding industry and deep knowledge on Global Forwardingproducts (Air Freight and Ocean Freight) and business models
  • 10+ years of management skills to steer Sales Teams
  • Ability to take ownership and proactively drive performance
  • Very Strong communication, presentation and negotiation skills
  • Ability to win, develop and close new business
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in a related field
